On the Isle of Islay there are folks who still use peat to heat their homes and so it is still cut out of the ground though with modern equipment:
In the Lakes region of England (the area of Beatrix Potter fame) there were many homes and walls built from slate. Because of the wet environment, we saw beautiful samples of little plants:
